Last month European Commissioner Viviane Reding announced that she wanted the price for SMS and DATA within the EU to decrease. This reaction happens 8 months after the application of the new Eurotarif that imposes maximum rates on mobile phone communications throughout the European countries. Ed Richards, OFCOM Chief Executive, announced that he supports this action.

For Transatel, the roaming specialist in Europe, “the solution is in increasing competition on the market, not regulating prices down. Today the need is to give network access to MVNOs focusing on frequent travelers, cross-border populations or vacationers. MVNOs can bring substantial price reduction and innovative services that will benefit to consumers and companies all over Europe”.

Jacques Bonifay, Transatel CEO, declared: “Today in Europe there are 4 MVNO dedicated to heavy roaming users. The number of these operators could grow if only regulation allowed their development instead of favoring the oligopoly of the big operators.” Moreover, Jacques Bonifay, regrets that “It is impossible nowadays, to sign MVNO deals with a mobile network operators in the UK. Therefore British resident cannot benefit from the 30% to 100% price reduction on roaming that Transatel is currently offering to its customers in France, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg.”

On Wednesday February 27th, Jacques Bonifay addressed a letter to Ed Richards (cf. file attached) in order to share his view on this issue with him.
